El Choco

I have just read the book El Choco - The swedish male in Bolivias notorious prison by Markus Lutterman.
El Choco: 27-year old Jonas Andersson from Kungälv in Sweden was deperate to get rid of his debts and therefore was trying to do a business trip to Bolivia.
He was caught on the airport with nearly three kilo cocain in his suitcases and ended up at the notorious prison El penal de San Pedro, 3 600 meter over the sea in Bolivias maincity La Paz.

Jonas Anderssons first time was a struggle for his life. But the chaotic years on San Pedro become ironic the turning-point in his life . Hi stopped taking drogs, get married and he even become a dad for the first time...

El Choco is the fascinating story about a swedish mans struggle off survive in a crazy and foreign country, about love against all odds, about a country in revolt. The writer Markus Lutteman is newsreporter at Svenska Dagbladet. El Choco is his first book. *************************************
South America has some of the most notoriously bad prisons in the world! Known for poor conditions, riots, corruption, many are run by gangs who control every aspect of existence.
The prison riots, mostly over poor conditions have been frequent & brutal, as the graphic images of Carandru prison show.
The first hand experiences of prisoners indicate voilence and corruption at a level uncontrolled by the prison administration.
